A Field Guide to Getting Lost

Rebecca Solnit

Essays on distance, uncertainty and the uses of not knowing where you are. The chapter on the colour blue is the one people quote; the ones on wandering are the ones that change how you walk.

Solnit is writing about being lost as a condition worth entering deliberately, rather than as a failure of navigation. The book moves between memoir, art criticism and natural history without announcing the changes, which is part of the point.

The blue chapters — on the colour of distance, of the horizon, of the thing you cannot reach — are justly famous. They are also the easiest to quote and the hardest to use.

The quieter essays on walking and on not arriving are the ones that did the work for me. They make a case for the unfinished that is difficult to argue with and harder to practise.
